Hike up to see one of the few historical beacons in the UK before heading over to view some castle ruins.
At just under 9km, this is an easy hike with some slight incline. The route is mainly road based with a few grassy pathways.
Why you’ll enjoy this Yorkshire hike:
This hike is good for all ages and abilities and has the bonus of a stop in the middle to explore the Danby Lodge National Park Centre part way through. While we were visiting it was around Easter and there were fun activities for children. There's also a stunning art gallery, cute shop, an indoor kids play area and a cafe for some decent lunchtime food.
Points of interest:
Danby Beacon has been around since the 1600's to warn of incoming invasion. When the old structure disintegrated due to age it was replaced with a new version that kept in mind the surrounding landscape and historical significance. Not far from the main car park and surrounded by incredible views of the North York Moors, the beacon is just a short uphill walk away. The secod half of the hike takes you through lower lying fields in the valley over to Danby Castle where Catherine Parr (one of Henry VIII's wives) used to live. Since then it has turned into a beautiful barn and wedding venue.
When to go:
With the majority of this route being on roads and just a couple of short grassy paths, you should be good to visit throughout most of the year. Bear in mind that you may not be able to look around the Castle if there is an event on.
What to pack:
I've created a page on the site for easy access to a handy packing list which you can access here.
Final thoughts:
This was a nice easy hike and can definitely be done in trainers. It's not strenuous and is located close to the coast if you fancy munching on fish and chips afterwards.
